What if the category weights don't add up to 100?

The tool flags it and shows both the raw sum and a normalized grade (scaled to sum = 100). Most syllabi add up to exactly 100; if yours doesn't, check for extra-credit categories or syllabus typos.

How are assignments within a category combined?

By default, all assignments in a category are averaged equally. This is what Canvas and Blackboard do. If your instructor weights individual assignments inside a category (e.g. one project worth 2× another), use a sub-category or add the heavier one multiple times.

Can I skip categories I haven't been graded in yet?

Yes. Categories with no assignments are excluded and their weight redistributed proportionally across graded categories — matching how mid-semester course grades are reported by most LMSs before all assignments are in.
