How much waste should I budget?

10% is the default for straight-lay carpet, vinyl, and standard plank flooring. Use 15% for diagonal layouts or pattern-matched carpet (florals, large repeats). Use 20% for herringbone, chevron, or rooms with many cut-outs (kitchens with islands, bathrooms with fixtures).

Why convert to square yards?

Broadloom carpet is priced and sold by the square yard in the US (and by the linear meter for 12-ft or 15-ft rolls). 1 sq yard = 9 sq ft. Hardwood, laminate, vinyl plank, and tile are sold by the square foot or by the box (each box covers a stated sqft).

Should I include closets and entryways?

Yes for carpet (continuous run is preferred). For tile, hardwood, and plank flooring, measure each space separately if you want precise box counts — small spaces often have higher waste percentages because of cuts.

What about irregular rooms?

Break the room into rectangles, calculate each separately, and sum. For one-room L-shaped layouts, add 5% extra waste because the longest run determines material orientation. Round up to the next whole box / yard at purchase.

What about underlayment and pad?

Carpet pad and laminate underlayment are sold separately, also by the square foot or yard. Use the same total square footage (without the waste % — pad doesn't waste, just trim to fit).
