Why alphabetize bibliographies?

APA, MLA, and Chicago reference lists must be alphabetical by author surname. Readers find sources by last name; automated tools (Zotero, EndNote) assume alphabetical order. Any style that uses in-text citations like (Smith, 2024) requires alphabetical bibliography so the reader can find the matching entry in under a second.

How are multi-line entries handled?

Entries are separated by blank lines. Each entry can span multiple lines (common for long citations). The tool keeps entries intact during sort — only the first character of the first line determines position.

What counts as a duplicate?

Exact text match, after trimming whitespace and lowercasing. This catches accidental copy-paste duplicates. It does NOT match semantically equivalent citations in different styles — `Smith 2024` in MLA and `Smith, J. (2024)` in APA look like distinct entries to the tool.
