What counts as a need vs a want?

Needs are things you'd cut last in a crisis — housing, utilities, groceries (not restaurants), insurance, minimum debt payments, transportation to work. Wants include dining out, streaming services, gym memberships, vacations, and non-essential shopping.

What goes in the 20% savings bucket?

Emergency fund contributions, extra debt payoff beyond the minimum, retirement contributions (if not already taken pre-tax), and long-term goals like a down payment. Minimum required debt payments belong in the 50% needs bucket.

What if my needs exceed 50%?

This is common in high-cost-of-living areas. Options: increase income, relocate housing, cut wants temporarily, or accept a modified split (e.g. 60/20/20) while working toward the target. The rule is a guideline, not a law.
