Why isn't it 7 years per dog year?

The 7-year rule was a marketing slogan invented in the 1950s, never based on biology. Real dog aging is non-linear: a dog reaches sexual maturity at ~10 months (= human teenager), and is ~24 in human years at age 2. After that, aging slows — and varies by size. Small breeds reach 'old age' around 11-12 human-equivalent decades; giant breeds at 7-8.

How is the dog formula calculated?

AVMA/AAHA: Year 1 = 15 human years, Year 2 = +9, Year 3+ adds 4-5 per year for small dogs, 5-6 for medium, 6-7 for large, 7-9 for giant. This calculator interpolates by adult weight.

Standard formula: First year = 15 human years, second year = +9 (so age 2 = 24), then +4 per year. A 16-year-old cat ≈ 80 human years. Cats age more uniformly than dogs because size variation is smaller.

Why do small dogs live longer?

Active research area. Leading hypothesis: large dogs grow much faster (a Great Dane puppy gains pounds per week vs ounces for a Chihuahua), and rapid growth correlates with shorter lifespan across mammals. Cellular replication, mitochondrial wear, and IGF-1 levels all play a role.

What about epigenetic age?

A 2020 UCSD study used DNA methylation to map dog age to human age — the curve is logarithmic: human age ≈ 16 × ln(dog_age) + 31. By this formula, a 1-year-old dog ≈ 31 human, a 2-year-old ≈ 42, an 8-year-old ≈ 64, a 14-year-old ≈ 73. Useful conceptually but not commonly used by vets.
