A height-weight BMI works for humans because we're roughly the same shape. For pets, vets use BCS — a 1-9 hands-on rating: 1 = emaciated, 5 = ideal, 9 = obese. Each point above 5 represents ~10-15% over ideal weight.

How do I check ribs and waist?

Ribs (touch test): Run your fingers along the side. Ideal = ribs felt easily without firm pressure, like running fingers over the back of your knuckles. Hard to feel = overweight. Visible without touch = underweight. Waist (visual, top view): Ideal pet narrows behind the ribs. No narrowing = overweight. Tummy tuck (side view): Ideal pet's belly tucks up behind the ribs. Sagging belly = overweight.

What's a healthy BCS range?

Ideal: BCS 4-5/9 for most dogs and cats. Acceptable: 4-6 (small variance with breed). 7+ = overweight, action required. 8-9 = obese, vet visit recommended. 1-3 = underweight, may signal illness or under-feeding.

How fast should an overweight pet lose weight?

Safe rate: 1-2% of body weight per week. A 20 kg dog at BCS 7 (≈10% overweight) needs to lose ~2 kg over 8-10 weeks. Faster than 2%/week risks muscle loss and metabolic stress (especially in cats — fatty liver disease is a real risk in fast-fasting overweight cats).

Should I trust the scale or the BCS?

Both, weekly. Scale catches numerical change; BCS catches body-composition change. A pet can lose weight but body composition shift toward fat (bad). Or maintain weight and shift toward muscle (good). BCS is the gold standard; scale is the rough guide.
